10 Myths Your Boss Has Regarding Over The Ear Headphones Wireless

Best Over the Ear Headphones

Wireless headphones allow you to listen to podcasts or music anywhere without having to run an audio cable from your device. They are an excellent choice for public transport, while at work or at home.

Wireless over-ear headphones are available in a variety and noise cancelling capabilities. They usually come with a sleek storage case.

Soundcore Life Q30

A major upgrade over the Soundcore Life 2 from late-2018 These earphones look better, feel sturdier, and are generally more polished. They're still largely plastic but the hinges are a bit more secure and the soft leather ear cups are larger. You can swap the 3.5mm cord with a high quality USB-C cable and connect them to mobile Hi-Res as well as stationary players. They also come with two built-in mics that worked well in our tests with FaceTime, Skype and Microsoft Teams calls.

The Soundcore app has a huge selection of EQ presets, which can be customized and saved to listen to music and podcasts in the way you prefer. The Soundcore app is easy to use and sets these headphones apart.

When ANC is turned on, the Q30's 40mm drivers block out most of the ambient noise, and provide very pleasant listening. They have a natural sound profile that leans a little on the treble end, which some may feel is lacking in bass response (we got better results with the Bass Booster EQ preset). However, you can easily rectify this using the Soundcore application, as there's an equalizer with 8 bands that can help you tweak.

best budget over ear wireless headphones  have a power button and pairing button on the left ear cup along with a USB-C port for charging. The right earcup has play/pause and the volume up and down buttons. Double-clicking these controls lets you to skip tracks or replay previous ones. You can also make use of voice commands to ask them to switch modes or set alarms. The right earcup can be covered with your hand to activate ambient mode to allow you to hear what's happening around you, without removing the headphones.

These headphones have a fantastic battery life. In our tests with ANC turned on, the Q30 ran for almost an hour longer than the other headphones. This allows you to take advantage of an extended flight or a long day at work. They can be easily recharged by using the USB-C cable that comes with them and you'll get an alert when they're getting empty.

Focal Bathys Wireless

Focal's Bathys Wireless are a set of powerful over-ear headphones that provide both active noise cancellation and Bluetooth playback. These headphones are designed to be premium, high-end headphones that can be used at home or while on the move. The headphones are a bit more expensive than similar headphones, but their superior sound quality is what makes them stand out.

The Focal Bathys are packaged in a slim, compact and attractive fabric-finished white retail box with all the accessories you require inside. There's also a fold-flat carry case for the headphones and a USB-C cable to USB C cable, 1.2mmSE cable and an audio converter.

The battery's capacity is 600mAh, which will last for a whole day of listening to music casually. They also have an audio input to use wired. When connected wirelessly, they're paired via Bluetooth and you'll be able to manage their functions via an app (now known as Focal and Naim, probably in the same vein as their English Naim brand's products that are network-aware) or by pressing the dedicated button on the left ear cup that allows you to switch between ANC profiles like'silent','soft' 'transparent' and  full.

Utilizing the app, you are able to change various settings, including the LED brightness as well as EQ presets that include a "music' profile that sounds more neutral and brighter than the other ones and their battery life. You can also choose the ANC mode and level as well as setting an 'acoustic settings setting to alter the sensitivity to mimic the sound of headphones in a different room.

The Focal Bathys come with bass-rich, rich sound profiles that delivers extra energy and warmth to your favorite tracks. This means that instruments and vocals are pushed back into the mix, and can sound dull, while other details such as cymbals sound not as prominent as you'd expect on other headphones. They're also not as effective at active noise cancellation when compared to other over-ears with more advanced technology, like the Sony WH-1000XM5 or Apple AirPods Max.

Sony WH-1000XM5

Sony headphones are well-known for their quality and the WH1000XM5 is not an exception. It sits at the upper end of the mainstream over-ear headphone market, edging into the  luxury lifestyle sector where brands like Bang & Olufsen, Apple and Montblanc hang out. The XM5s are costly however, if you are able to get them, you won't find a better wireless headphones.

The XM5s have features that make life easier for listeners and, in a few cases, automate tasks they'd otherwise have to deal with manually. Sony's DSEE Extreme engine (which upscales compressed music to close to high-res) is also included, as is support for Bluetooth's LDAC technology. This lets high-quality music to be streamed with bitrates that are higher than Bluetooth. There's even a built-in microphone to allow making hands-free calls.

The XM5 headphones are no different from the previous generation of headphones from WH, in regards to noise cancellation. They're among the best-performing cans for cutting out continuous drones that can be heard in train and underground carriages. The XM5s are also excellent at separating listeners from the hum of busy streets and airports.

The sound quality is also great. The XM5s aren't as detailed in the low frequencies as the XM4, but there's a more pronounced sense of clarity and openness also. The bass on Rage Against the Machine's Bullet in the Head shows the Sonys strength and clarity but without affecting the rest of the music. The XM5s are also able to deliver precise and tight bass notes in Massive Attack's Angel.

The battery life is also good, providing up to 30 hours of listening time with ANC active and 40 hours when it's turned off. This is more than enough for a weekend trip or a long period of use.

The XM5s do not come with waterproof or dust-proof. In fact, Sony recommends that you not sweat on them or wear them out in the rain. This may not be a problem for some people, but it could cause a problem for anyone who spend a lot of their time at the gym or lives in a rainy city.

Apple AirPods Max

The Apple AirPods Max are a pair of over-ear wireless headphones that come with Bluetooth technology and noise cancelling. Apple designed dynamic drivers measuring 40mm, with a neutral sound profile that emphasizes mids and highs without going too loud. They are perfect for movies and music. They also have better sound quality than many competing pairs of headphones.

The headphones are lightweight and feel comfortable on the head. The ear cups are made of memory foam, are covered with woven fabric and sit comfortably over the ear and do not place pressure on the sides or forehead. The ear cups can tilt and rotate to accommodate various head shapes. The spring-loaded hinges have a firm but not overly robust clamping force that ensures that the earcups remain in place throughout listening sessions.

You can toggle noise cancelling by pressing a small button at the top of the right earcup. There's also a pushable, jog-dial-like button, similar to the digital crown on the Apple Watch, that you can turn to adjust the volume and press it once twice or three times to control playback. Pressing and holding the button invokes Siri. The buttons are well-placed and easy to use, but I would have liked the power button that could switch off the headphones when they are not in use. The headphones are put into standby when removed from your ears, or when placed in their case. They only come back into use when you place them over your head.

Another great feature is spatial audio, which uses the accelerometers and gyroscopes in the AirPods Max and your iPhone or iPad to figure out where you're moving, then repositions the sound to create the illusion that they're coming from these locations. This creates an immersive theater experience for videos and movies that were recorded in 5.1, 7.1 or Dolby Atmos. Only iOS devices can be used to listen to the spatial audio.

The AirPods Max are a decent pair of headphones, but I'd feel a bit ripped off walking into an Apple Store and spending $549 on the headphones if I knew they'd be outdone in a year by the new model. AirPods Pro are more expensive and have better battery life and advanced features.
